DAY 1 | 09:30 - 14:30

After a warm meet and greet in the harbor, we will start our day off exploring Riga, located on the scenic Daugava river- bank, with a lovely introductory bus tour, learning of the local history and culture. We will pass the iconic Freedom Monument, erected in 1937 to commemorate the country's desire for freedom in the early 20th century, elegant building of the National Opera and the historic Riga Castle.
The capital of Latvia boasts a rich medieval heritage of quaint old town cobbled streets and a unique collection of Art Nouveau buildings beautifully preserved still today. We will pay a visit to the highlight of this 19th century style, the Art Nouveau Museum, located right in the center of the celebrated district itself. Entering through one of the most impressive spiral staircases, the museum is a fascinating collection of characteristic furnishings of an apartment in the beginning of the 20th century. Complete with wide brimmed ladies hats at the entrance to a working wood-burning stove in the kitchen, you’ll find this museum an utterly enjoyable way to experience this period.
After the lavish décor on the outskirts of the old town, we will experience something quite different in the atmosphere of lively old Riga. Its unique charm is as powerful as the traditional Black Balsam liquor, the traditional Latvian liquor/medicine, which reportedly cured even Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. Strolling through a medley of streets past delightful buildings dating back to the middle ages, we will see such magnificent highlights as the Statue of Roland, Town Hall, House of Blackheads and the Riga Cathedral. On our way are The Three Brothers, one of the oldest dwelling houses in Riga, which beautifully represent a period in the town’s history when it was a major trading hub. The Swedish Gates and segments of the pro- tective City Wall still exist as a beautiful reminder of the era.
We will also reserve some free time to explore on your own or take a rewarding coffee break. You will have the choice to either stay in town on your own, or return to the ship in comfort.
